Stickers and emoji

Emoji

Type : and a few letters for an emoji by name (:tada:), or press the smiley for the picker: a search box, skin tones, the categories, your most used, and this server's own custom emoji; Esc closes it. A message that is nothing but emoji is drawn large, always (there is no switch for it), and what you type is sent as you typed it: :) stays :).

Reactions

Hover or long-press a message and pick a reaction; the picker offers the eight most reached for, your own most used, this server's custom emoji, and the rest of Unicode behind one more button. Press a reaction you already made to take it back.

Stickers

The sticker button opens the picker: the ones you used recently first, then each pack this server offers you, in the order the operator put them in. From seven stickers up there is a search box; a letter typed over the grid goes into it; the arrow keys, Home and End walk the grid; Enter sends the one under the focus. A sticker in a message opens large on a press and says its name on hover. /sticker name sends one by name — the start of the name is enough when it fits only one.

An administrator adds stickers and custom emoji under Customization.

Packs

Every heading in the sticker picker is a pack. Yeetline is the pack that ships with the app and This server is what this server's administrators have uploaded; past those, an operator can name packs of their own and choose who is offered each — everyone, staff, or the roles they pick, and under any of those, accounts named one at a time.

You are shown the packs you are offered and no others. A pack you are not offered is not in your picker, is not in the list your app keeps, and does not announce itself: nothing here tells you that it exists.

A pack that is not offered to everyone carries a small role mark beside its heading, and the heading says who it is for. Send from one of those into a conversation and anyone there who is not offered that pack sees [sticker :name: not available here] where the picture would be — your app says so once, the first time you send from that pack into that conversation. You will see the same line when a sticker somebody else sent is not one your app holds. It may have been removed, or it may belong to a pack you are not offered; the line does not say which, because your app does not know which.

A pack's audience decides who is offered it — whose picker it appears in, and whose catalog this server composes it into. It is curation, not confidentiality. The images are ordinary files this server holds and can read; the operator serves the page every client runs; and a sticker sent into a room is sealed like every other message, so nothing here can stop a staff sticker being sent where a member can see its name. Use it to keep a staff pack out of a member's picker — not to keep a secret.

Custom emoji have no packs. Every custom emoji this server has is offered to everyone, deliberately: an emoji is a chip inside somebody else's sentence and inside a reaction row, so one a reader did not have would put a hole in a message that is not theirs, where a sticker degrades to a line that explains itself.
