Visiting as a guest

Where the operator has switched it on, the sign-in page offers Continue as a guest: a name for the visit, checked as it is typed, and one tap in.

What a guest is

An account that exists for as long as the tab does. It has a name, it can read and write where the guest role is allowed to, and it is deleted — with everything it wrote — when the tab closes or the connection is gone for a while. No passphrase, no keys kept on the device, no way back in under the same name once it is gone.

What a guest can do

Whatever the guest role holds on this server. The operator decides, ability by ability: posting, files, pictures, calls, starting a direct message. A guest who cannot do something is told so in the place they tried, not left guessing.

What a guest cannot do

Sync keys to the server, stay signed in, add a passkey, run a bot: each of those assumes an account with a future. The getting-started list is not shown either.

Keeping any of it

Create an account. The name a guest is holding is not taken by the guest — registering it evicts the guest and proceeds — but the messages written as a guest do not follow; they were sealed to keys that go with the tab.
