The email you are sent
Where this server sends email, the address on your account gets some. Some of it you can turn off, and some of it you cannot, and this page says which is which and why.
What you can turn off
Three kinds, each with its own switch:
- Activity — the answers to the bug and feature reports you send.
- Staff digests — the digest of new reports, a report assigned to you, and word that another admin signed the staff agreement. Only staff are sent these.
- Product updates — that this server was updated, or that an update did not go through. Only admins are sent these.
Turn one off and it is simply not sent: nothing is mailed to say so, and nobody else's mail changes. Turn it back on and the next one that comes goes as it always did; what was left unsent in between is not sent later.
What you cannot turn off
- Codes — to sign in, to confirm a new account's address, for a second factor, to get back in after losing one.
- A sign-in from a new device, and the one letter that says how many more there were.
- A change to what your account may do, such as being made an admin or a moderator.
- The welcome, which tells you an account was made in your name. It comes before there is anything to choose, and says what to do if it was not you.
The rule for these is one question: if it never arrived, could you be locked out, or unsafe, or unable to do something you owe? If so, it is always sent. The same goes for the letters a deployment's contact gets about the deployment itself — receipts, claim links, and what support writes — and for the test message an operator sends: none of them goes to an account, so there is nothing for a choice to belong to. And a kind of letter nobody has put on the list above counts as one you cannot turn off, so a mistake can only ever send you a letter, never hide one.
From the letter
An email you can stop ends with Unsubscribe from <kind> email, and your mail app may offer its own Unsubscribe button beside the sender, which does the same. The link opens a small page with the kind named and one button, Turn off <kind> email. It does nothing until you press it, so opening it by accident, or a mail filter looking at it first, changes nothing. Then it tells you what is off and that sign-in codes and security notices always arrive.
The link works for as long as the account does, however old the letter. An account that is renamed is the one exception: its earlier letters' links named the old name and stop working, so Settings → Email is the way then. It can turn that one kind off for your account and nothing else: it cannot turn anything on, read anything, or sign anyone in, so it is safe to leave in your inbox. An email you cannot stop has no such link — nor does it look as if it could be stopped.
A server that has not been given an address of its own has nowhere to send a link to. Its optional letters say instead to open Settings → Email.
From Settings
Settings → Email lists the three kinds with a switch each, and below them, by name, what is always sent. It is also where you turn a kind back on. The section is only there when the server you are on offers it. An account that is a guest, or a bot, is sent no email and has no section.
Only you can change these switches. An operator can see which are off, if you ask them why a letter never came, and has no way to turn one back on for you.
